The Wearable Device

The LingWear system uses a Xybernaut Mobile Assistant IV wearable computer for the display (www.xybernaut.com).
The Xybernaut has a 233 MHz Pentium processor and 160 MB RAM, and runs Windows 98.
The processing unit is worn around the waist, and a flat panel display shows the output.
Speech input is captured through an attached headset.
The current version requires the speech processing and other tasks to be performed on a separate laptop computer (an IBM Thinkpad, 260 MHz Pentium II, 280 MB RAM, running RedHat Linux).

The laptop can be directly attached to the Xybernaut with an ethernet connection, in which case the user must carry the laptop with him in a back pack.
Alternately, the laptop can be connected to the Xybernaut via a wireless link such as wireless ethernet (see photo), which frees the user from carrying the laptop. Future versions will be able to run entirely on the Xybernaut.
