In order to develop automatic sign translation systems, we are developing
three key technologies: text detection, optical character
recognition (OCR), and language translation. Our current work
focuses on Chinese sign translation and will extend to other
languages. The current system architecture is shown below. The
system can run on a desktop, laptop, and palm size PDA (e.g., an HP
Jornada 586 Pocket PC with a HP pocket camera). Click modules inside
